Skylights for Central Florida Homes

Skylights let you bring Florida’s sunlight into the rooms that need it most. The right skylights can brighten dark hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms, improve ventilation, and even support better energy efficiency when they are designed and installed correctly. At The Roof Guys, our family-owned, Central Florida–based team installs and services skylights every day, from tubular daylighting systems to full roof windows, so homeowners can enjoy natural light without worrying about leaks or hot spots.

For more than two decades, The Roof Guys have helped local homeowners repair aging skylights, replace storm-damaged units, and design new skylight layouts that work with Florida’s intense sun, heavy rain, and high winds. Whether you need a quick repair or a full upgrade with Solatube or VELUX products, our licensed and factory-trained technicians are here to help.

Why Skylights Are a Smart Upgrade for Your Home

When skylights are properly chosen and installed, they do much more than brighten a single spot on the floor. Quality skylights and roof windows can reduce the need for daytime electric lighting, support natural ventilation, and enhance the overall comfort and value of your home.

Modern skylight systems are engineered to perform well in warm climates like Central Florida. Features such as insulated glazing, low-E coatings, and advanced flashing kits help manage heat gain and reduce the risk of leaks when installed by a qualified contractor.

The Roof Guys Specialize in:

  • Traditional skylights and roof windows
  • Tubular skylights for hard-to-reach interior spaces
  • Solar-powered and venting skylights that add fresh air as well as light

Skylight Services

Every home, roof, and skylight issue is different. Our team offers a complete set of skylight services, so you get the right solution instead of a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Skylight Repair & Replacement

If your existing skylight is leaking, showing signs of condensation between panes, or has cracked acrylic or damaged flashing, it is time to have it inspected. Our skylight repair and replacement services focus on long-term solutions, not quick patches.

Depending on the condition and age of your unit, we may recommend:

  • Targeted repair to address flashing, seals, or surrounding roofing
  • Retrofitting a modern skylight into your existing opening
  • Full skylight replacement with a high-performance VELUX or Solatube system

Because we are also a licensed roofing contractor, we evaluate the surrounding roof area at the same time, which is essential in Florida’s storm-prone climate.

Our Skylight Repair Process

Homeowners often worry that skylight work will disrupt their schedules. Our skylight repair process is designed to be clear and predictable from the first phone call.

We start with a free consultation, followed by an in-home assessment from a certified consultant. You receive straightforward recommendations, pricing, and timelines so you can make an informed decision. Once approved, our background-checked, factory-trained technicians complete the repair or replacement with careful protection of your interior and landscaping.

Professional Skylight Installation for New Openings

If you are planning a remodel or simply want to bring more natural light into a dark interior, The Roof Guys can add new skylights and roof windows where none existed before. Our professional skylight installation includes structural review, product selection, and integration with your existing roofing system.

We routinely coordinate skylight projects with roof replacement, attic improvements, and solar upgrades, which helps homeowners maximize both budget and energy performance.

Skylight Options

Solatube Tubular Skylights for Interior Spaces

For hallways, closets, interior bathrooms, and other rooms far from exterior walls, Solatube tubular skylights provide a powerful daylighting option. Unlike traditional skylights, Solatube systems capture sunlight at the roof, then deliver it through a highly reflective tube that can navigate around attic obstacles and framing.

On our dedicated Solatube skylight systems page, you can explore:

  • How Solatube’s advanced dome and tubing technology maximizes light while limiting heat
  • Design options for diffusers and fixtures that match your interior style
  • Ways tubular skylights reduce daytime energy use by cutting reliance on electric lighting

Because the roof opening for a Solatube tubular skylight is relatively small, these systems are often a strong choice for energy-conscious homeowners and for roofs with limited space around trusses or other structures.

VELUX Skylights & Roof Windows

When homeowners want expansive views, fresh air, and a strong design statement, VELUX skylights and roof windows are often the answer. As certified VELUX installers, The Roof Guys offer a full line of fixed, manual venting, electric, and solar-powered skylights designed for residential use

Our VELUX skylights page walks through:

  • Fixed skylights that deliver consistent daylight in living rooms, kitchens, and entryways
  • Venting models that release hot, trapped air near the ceiling to improve comfort
  • Solar-powered blinds and shades that help manage light levels and energy performance

VELUX systems are engineered with integrated flashing kits, laminated or tempered glass, and advanced shading to meet modern energy and safety standards, which is especially important in a region with strong sun and frequent storms.

Choosing the Right Skylight for Your Space

Selecting the right skylight is about more than picking a size and shape. Roof structure, ceiling height, room use, and exposure all affect the best solution. Our consultants help you weigh options such as tubular skylights versus larger roof windows, venting versus fixed units, and different glazing or shade combinations.

Key factors we review with every homeowner include:

  • Room function and layout, including where light is needed most during the day
  • Roof orientation and pitch, which affect sun exposure and potential heat gain
  • Attic conditions and obstructions between the roof and ceiling
  • Desired level of ventilation, privacy, and light control
  • Budget, financing preferences, and long-term maintenance expectations

During your consultation, we can also discuss how skylights fit into broader energy-saving improvements, such as roof coatings or attic ventilation upgrades, so you see the full picture of comfort and efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Federal Solar Tax Credit

When did the federal solar tax credit expire?

The federal solar tax credit for residential solar products expired on December 31, 2025. As a result, this incentive is no longer available for Solatube products, including solar-powered attic fans, garage fans, and tubular skylights with integrated solar NightLight.

If you have questions about other available incentives, please contact us or consult your tax advisor.

How to Claim the Tax Credit

Claiming your tax credit is a straightforward process:

    • Keep Your Documentation: Save the receipts and the manufacturer’s certification statement confirming your Solar Star® Attic Fan qualifies for the credit and was installed before the December 31, 2025 deadline.
    • Complete IRS Form 5695: Use this form (Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit) and fill out the necessary sections for solar-powered ventilation products installed prior to the expiration date.
    • Include the Credit on Your Tax Return: When filing your federal taxes for the year the installation was completed (and before the expiration), apply the credit to reduce your tax liability.
How to Qualify for the Tax Credit

To claim the federal tax credit for your Solar Star® Attic Fan, be sure to meet the following criteria. Please note: The federal solar tax credit for solar-powered attic fans expired on December 31, 2025. Only products installed and operational before this date are eligible.

  • Solar-Powered Product: The fan must be solar-powered, as only solar energy devices qualify for this specific tax credit. The unit must have been installed and operational by December 31, 2025.
  • Residential Use: The product must be installed in your primary or secondary residence (not in rental properties), and installation must have been completed before the tax credit expiration date.
  • Proper Documentation: Retain all purchase and installation receipts, as well as the manufacturer’s certification statement, to support your claim. Make sure documentation reflects the installation was completed before December 31, 2025.

If you have questions about eligibility based on your installation date, consult your tax advisor or refer to official IRS guidelines.

What was the Federal Tax Credit?

The Federal Tax Credit for Residential Solar Energy was a government incentive that allowed homeowners to claim a percentage of the cost of eligible solar-powered products—such as solar attic fans, solar garage fans, and certain tubular skylights—on their federal income taxes.

For qualifying products installed and operational before December 31, 2025, homeowners could receive a tax credit equal to 30% of the total cost (including product and installation). This credit directly reduced the amount of federal tax owed, making it easier and more affordable to invest in energy-efficient, solar-powered home improvements.

Important: The federal solar tax credit for these products expired on December 31, 2025. Only installations completed before this date are eligible to claim the credit.

If you have questions about past eligibility or need documentation, consult your tax advisor.

How long does a roof last?

The lifespan of a roof actually depends on the materials used to create the roofing system you have in place. These following roofs all offer different benefits and vary in durability:

Asphalt Roll- This type of roof is actually made up of rolls of the same material that composes single asphalt shingles. Since it’s in the form of a roll, it’s easier to install and can last up to five to ten years.

Asphalt Single Shingle- These shingles feature a fiberglass or organic base that’s combined with asphalt. Organic asphalt shingles are covered with pieces of quartz, ceramic, or even slate. This popular roofing material is slated to last about 15 to 40 years.

Clay or Cement Tile- These are both extremely strong and durable materials that are made to last for several years. Though they require special installation, these materials are worth it as the roof can last up to 100 years or more.

Wood Shingle- Created from natural wood such as pine or cedar, there’s a natural and woodsy element added to your home when selecting this option. Wood shingles can last up to 30 years or longer depending on the type of climate the house is exposed to.

What is fascia on a house?

Fascia is a band of trim that runs along the edge of a roof, typically at the eaves. It is usually made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, or composite materials and is used to cover the end of rafters or trusses and hide the edges of the roof decking. It also helps to protect the underlying structure from the elements.

So, when do you know when you need a new roof? These are several signs that indicate that your current roof needs some TLC:

  • Shingles are curled or cupped
  • Noticeable bald spots showing granules missing
  • Noticeable cracked shingles
  • Visually old and worn in spots
  • Homes around you are making roof updates (Homes in the same vicinity are usually built around the same time.)
  • Dark streaks are present
  • Signs of moss

By neglecting an update on a roof with the above issues, it could result in potential new ones. Don’t delay and jeopardize the overall health of your home!

Give us a call at 1-866-259-2364! We’ll be there to assist you as soon as we can, and we’ll determine the best course of action for your current situation. Leaks normally occur when there is heavy, severe storm occurring, and those are no stranger to the state of Florida!

  • Contain the water to stop the spread
  • Remove signs of the leak as the water starts to slow
  • Call your insurance agent to know your options

If you haven’t encountered a leak, that’s great! Here are a few ways to prevent them, so they won’t become a future issue:

  • Trim the trees surrounding your house
  • Keep all gutters and downspouts clean
  • Make sure there are no issues with collars and flashing

How do I repair a roof leak?
  1. Identify the source of the leak. If the leak is hard to identify, try to narrow it down to a specific area.
  2. Repair any damage to the roof. Remove any damaged shingles and inspect the underlying roofing material for damage.
  3. Patch the leak. This can be done by using roofing tar, a roofing patch, or shingle patch material.
  4. Apply a waterproof sealant. This will help keep moisture out and prevent future leaks. 5. Clean up any remaining debris.
  5. Inspect the roof regularly. Regular inspections can help identify small problems before they become bigger issues.
