How Does a Solatube Tubular Skylight Work?

The rooftop dome’s rounded shape enables it to collect sunlight throughout the day, including the low angle light of early morning and late afternoon that a flat skylight misses. Solatube’s RayBender 3000 and LightTracker technology redirect that daylight down into Spectralight Infinity tubing, which reflects 99.7% of the light it carries and can route around attic obstacles with very little loss. At the ceiling, the fixture spreads the daylight evenly through the room.

The dome blocks essentially all UVB and UVC rays and about 98.5 percent of UVA, so floors and furniture are protected from fading. The tubing also sheds much of the sun’s heat on the way down, so the room gets brighter without warming up the way it can under a glass skylight.
